Gary Richards to Start New Cruise Fest, ‘Friend Ship’

Richards has begun to open up about his plans as President of LiveStyle.

The dance world wondered what Gary Richards (aka Destructo) had up his sleeve when he left HARD, the company he founded in 2007. What would become of the festivals that came with it, including the popular Holy Ship!, after Richards sold HARD to Live Nation in 2012 and his five-year contract went unrenewed? He soon announced his new position as President of competitor LiveStyle.

As he sinks his teeth into 2018, Richards has begun to open up about his future plans. In a recent chat with Mixmag, he explained how his new role as LiveStyle President allows him to work with a larger team on events broader than his own personal “babies.” He played a strong hand in the curation of Life in Color in Miami earlier this month, and he now sets his attention to Disco Donnie events, in particular Sunset Festival in Tampa, as well as MADE’s Electric Zoo in New York and Spring Awakening in Chicago.

Richards also disclosed that he is working on a new brand of his own in LA, and yes, it will include festivals and music cruises. The theme of his new brand is “friendship,” and comes to life in his 2018 tour “Let’s Be Friends.” He recently played New York City’s Output, where he was joined by Busta Rhymes, who worked through some of his most iconic hits. Dancing Astronaut reports that Richards took to the mic and announced this new music cruise would be dubbed the “Friend Ship.” We’ll have to wait to see if that gets confirmation; Billboard Dance has reached out to Richard’s camp for additional comment.
