Leif Olson nominated for US Attorney for Iowa’s Northern District
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - President Donald Trump nominated Leif Olson to serve as U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Iowa.
Iowa’s Northern District, which includes Linn, Black Hawk and Dubuque County, has not had an official U.S. Attorney since Pete Deegan stepped down in 2021.
Timothy Duax has been the acting U.S. Attorney since then. Olson will replace Duax.
Olson is currently serving as Iowa’s Chief Deputy Attorney General, and previously oversaw the Attorney General of Texas’ Special Litigation Division.
“I’m humbled by President Donald Trump’s nomination,” Olson said. “I’m also grateful to Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley and Senator Joni Ernst for their endorsements. The opportunity to serve Iowa and our Nation is a blessing.”
The nomination has been sent to the Senate Judiciary Committee for consideration. The Senate will then vote on the nomination following a recommendation from the Committee.
Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird released the statement regarding the nomination:
“I am glad that the President nominated Leif Olson, who will work hard as U.S. Attorney to uphold our laws and constitution as a prosecutor. He supports our law enforcement and will work to keep Iowans safe and protect victims of crime. Leif brings leadership, knowledge, and passion for the rule of law to this new position.”
U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley released the following statement:
“I wholeheartedly support Mr. Olson’s nomination to the U.S. Attorney position in Iowa’s Northern District. Having 20 years of experience as a trial lawyer, public servant and appellate lawyer, Mr. Olson is highly qualified to serve the people of Iowa. As Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, I’ll work to move his nomination forward swiftly.”
U.S. Senator Joni Ernst released the following statement:
“I am proud to see President Trump nominate Leif Olson to serve as the U.S. Attorney for Iowa’s Northern District. He has honorably served our state and nation, and I look forward to working with Senator Grassley to move Mr. Olson’s nomination forward.”
