Trump administration proposes to cut NASA budget by almost 25%

According a budget proposal released by the White House, the government wants to allocate $18.8 billion for NASA

WASHINGTON, May 3. /TASS/. The US administration wants to cut NASA funding by almost a quarter in fiscal year 2026, according a budget proposal released by the White House.

According to a memo to the proposal, the government wants to allocate $18.8 billion for NASA, down from $24.8 billion in the current year. That would represent a reduction of 24%.

Almost all NASA's operations would be affected, including the International Space Station. Allocations for the ISS would be cut by $508 million. The proposal also takes the scissors to some research plans that are not related to crewed spaceflights. Among them is the project to collect samples of Martian rocks and bring them to Earth.

However, overall spending on crewed spaceflight would be bumped up by $647 million. The White House said it seeks a US return to the Moon ahead of China and wants to send humans to Mars.
