OHIO, USA — Ohio's tornado count is leading the nation and continues to climb.
Typically each year, Ohio will see on average 21 tornadoes. That total was surpassed in early April.
As of the afternoon of April 18, Ohio's total tornado count is at 35, which is a new record for the most tornadoes through the first three months of the year. The previous record was set back in 1986 with 12 tornadoes.
Behind Ohio, Florida has the second most with 34 tornadoes, followed by Illinois with 30 and Kentucky with 24.
There is a more favorable weather pattern that could bring more strong to severe storms and tornadoes across the Midwest this year. This could make it possible for the state to break another record.
The most tornadoes in a year that Ohio has seen was in 1992 with 62 tornadoes. The strongest that year was an EF-4 in Van Wert County.
Ohio's tornado season is typically between April to June. However, tornadoes can happen at any time of the year.
