The Fiji Building Designers Association draft Constitution has been passed at a Special General Meeting yesterday at the Fiji Club, Suva.
Association president Shailendra Mudliar said the FBDA Constitution was the main subject of discussion in the meeting and they are happy that it has been passed.
“We are a new association trying to formalise all our members and to run an association we need a supreme document with is the constitution,” said Mr Mudliar.
Now he said they were trying would ensure that it be formally formulated and tailor made for local members.
There are 52 registered members under the association.
“We as an association representing all members who are registered or will become a member.
“We have plans to organise workshops to up skill our members for professional development and get them up to par with international standards.”
Warren Yee, chairman of the Fiji Building Standards and IRWIN ALSOP PACIFIC LTD managing director/ mechanical engineer presented to the association yesterday and highlighted some of the key points they needed to take into consideration for their draft constitution.
Mr Yees said: “The objective of the association was to develop registration and licensing framework for skilled professional in the building sectors.
“That will encapsulate fees and charges, training and capacity building of registered skilled professionals.
“To appoint an independent board and the relevant Ministry or agency that will look into the licencing and registration of the skilled professionals in the building sector.
“To develop requirements and competencies for registration of the skilled professionals in the building sector.
“We have to ensure that we follow the international best practice.”
Mr Yee highlighted that the association work closely with the Construction Industry Council.
“Construction Industry Council is an umbrella organisation and an industry voice and I suggest that FBDA play an active part in it.
“Together and united our voice would be powerful and we should use it to bring about positive change to our industry and the built environment in Fiji.
“The points highlighted by Mr Yee will be taken into consideration.
“In fact the constitution we are proposing has a lot of information on what Mr Yee suggested so it won’t be a difficult task because we had incorporated it already.”
