Winter Footwear Walk along the Delaware Canal on Feb. 18

Join the Friends of the Delaware Canal on Sunday, Feb. 18, at 1 p.m. for a Winter Footwear Walk along the snowy towpath.

The 3-mile roundtrip walk will begin in the parking lot across from the former Mountainside Inn in the village of Point Pleasant. The street address is 4728 River Road, New Hope.

Delaware Canal State Park Educator, Katie Martens, and Friends' Executive Director, Susan Taylor, will guide the trek along the scenic Delaware Canal towpath between the villages of Point Pleasant and Lumberville. Participants will learn about the history of the two villages and the intriguing Devil's Half Acre that lies midway, and, perhaps, catch glimpses of bald eagles and waterfowl along the way. The outing will end with hot chocolate and homemade cookies.

For those who would like to try out new types of winter footwear, the Delaware Canal State Park has acquired snowshoes and micro-spikes that can be borrowed at no charge.

Ten pairs of snowshoes in assorted adult sizes and three pairs in kids' size are ready to meet the snow-covered towpath, and the Park now has 15 pairs of micro-spikes in adult sizes for icy conditions.

To borrow snowshoes or micro-spikes from the Park, please reserve them in advance by calling 215-862-2021 or e-mailing friends@fodc.org. The equipment will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Wearing personal footwear of all sorts is more than welcome.

The Winter Footwear Walk is free and will be held conditions permitting, including no snow. Check on the homepage of www.fodc.org for a Go/No Go message that will be posted by 8 a.m. on Feb. 18.
