The interest of Lithuanian university students in doing an internship in the US-based National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has decreased in 2016, with the number of applications for the internship down by half year-on-year, reports LETA.

This year, the Lithuanian Agency for Science, Innovation and Technology received 17 applications, as compared with 29 Lithuanian students interested in the opportunity last year, Viktoras Mongirdas, senior specialist at the agency's International Programs Division, told BNS Lithuania on Tuesday.

"We have received 17 applications that are currently undergoing an administrative check to find out the number that have been filled out correctly. Subject assessment will follow," said Mongirdas.

The Lithuanian agency will shortlist six students it will submit to NASA, which will subsequently pick four.

The internships are scheduled for the fall and summer, each including two Lithuanian students. The internships will take place at NASA's AMES research center based in Palo Alto, California.
